Past - Present - Future

The Darton Centre project is completed and installed. It will be officially be opened on Friday 2nd December. The treasured old building of the Darton Urban District Council has been celebrated in the artwork produced for the New Darton Centre, near Barnsley, South Yorkshire through engagement with the community, local history group, children's centre, high school and former councillors and employees of the Darton U.D.C. An artefact trail guides visitors through the various items of historical value salvaged from the former building and leads towards the artwork and oral history audio recording.

Ryedale Artfest Exhibition

I will also be exhibiting a framed edition of the Monthly Map books which are part of a art intervention which wasstarted in 2008. The project was calledthe Daily Colour Project: Sustaining systems

Monthly Map: August (work in progress) 2011

In this project daily interventions of coloursorting the family laundry were photographed. The project was originally produced for the Start 4 Art commissionawarded on my graduation in 2008 from York St John University. The work explores how small systems underpinand regulate our lives in both constructive and limiting ways. The normality of life which we often takefor granted can easily be affected by external factors such as changing weatherpatterns or health. The apparentrepetitive pattern is actually changing indefinitely.

Only two editions of the Monthly Map Artist Bookshave been hand made. They were designedfor the Home from Home Exhibition aspart of the 14th Leeds International Artist Book Fair in March 2011.

This digital artwork is the first creation for a bicycle project which is part of an ongoing collaboration between Cycle Heaven and Bar Lane. I wanted to capture the daily activities of the workshop and the skill and speed of the technicians. I brought in my 25 year old bike to be reconditioned and photographed for the duration of the service.

Available in a signed limited edition of 25 prints on watercolour paper.

Post - Exhibition and Bike Project

On Friday 24th June at 6pm, Bar Lane Studios' group of graduate artist interns will unveil a major exhibition of their talents to commemorate their year in residence at the city's creative hub.

The group, comprising five artists and a theatre company, were the first set of York St John University arts graduates to take up residence at Bar Lane after it opened last year. The YSJ-funded internship scheme provides graduates with studio spaces, exhibition opportunities, work experience and professional mentoring in order to help these fledgeling creative businesses establish themselves. Now, as they near the end of their year's residence, the group are preparing their showcase exhibition to fill Bar Lane's main gallery.

Diverse artists Jade Blood, Susanne Davies, Matt Durrant, Tom Hodgson and Catherine Scriven will display vibrant new artworks and all-female theatre company Six Lips will perform a new piece on opening night devised especially for the occasion.

The exhibition runs at Bar Lane Studios' main gallery from Friday 24th June until Saturday 2nd July, and kicks off with a preview event at 6pm on the 24th. This event is open to all art lovers and will include refreshments provided by York Brewery.

For the Post - Exhibition, I will be showing new work based on a Bicycle Project. This Project is in conjunction with Cycle Heaven, Bishopthorpe Road, where our artwork has been placed into the Display Windows of this Bike Shop. For the project my 25 year old bike, which had been neglected for the last two years is undergoing a transformation at the Cycle Heaven workshop. This has been recorded with photographs and is forming the basis of a digital photo composite artwork in progress. As a taster here are the BEFORE and AFTER photographs. The artwork recorded the Bike Transformation from 9:43 to 11:52 am on 17/05/2011. Artwork to be unveiled on the preview of POST - on 24th of June at Bar Lane Studios.

Tanka are an ancient form of Japanese Poetry still used today. The Tanka Seasons and Green Smoke Rising artworks are a response to Japanese Tanka poetry written about a thousand years ago, between 1250 AD and 850 AD. The poems are ancient but the imagery expressed in them is still true today. I linked the old poems with contemporary imagery and technology to produce digital prints. Their content resonates across time and space from the Far East to the West.

I discovered the Tanka poems and oriental aesthetics while studying at York St John University in 2005 and 2006 under the guidance of Dr Hisashi Nakamura. Dr Nakamura is a founder of the Anglo-Japanese Tanka society (www.tankasociety.com) and originally translated the poems into English. He later published them in a book The Floating Bridge: Tanka Poems in English (ISBN 978-1-85072-360-8).

Installation of Monthly Map books

Home from Home Exhibition
Installed the Monthly Map Books today in a Victorian town house where each themed room displays a intriguing variation of artist works related to home and books.

These Monthly Map books are based on a visual source gathered for the Daily Colour Project (Sustaining Systems) which I did in 2008. The project was investigating the interaction of art and domestic daily situations. As an emerging artist I was investigation how to establish an artistic practise and routine, when more everyday essential routines were demanding for my attention. Through this investigation it also became apparent that maintaining a daily routine was a low-key but important means of surviving when unpredictable and destabilising events happened.

'With ideas ranging from the domestic to displacement, over 80 artists from 7 different countries have contributed to this years Artist Book Collective exhibition around the theme of Home. 153 Woodhouse Lane is the setting for Home from Home, to be shown alongside the 14th Leeds International Artist Book Fair. As a spacious Victorian terrace situated over three floors, it provides the perfect backdrop for this site-specific exhibition.

Artists responded to the brief through exploring and expanding on the book as a time-based medium, whilst incorporating the notion of the Everyday. Traditional book works as well as sculptural objects, text, narrative, video, furniture, audio and performance are represented throughout the show.

The concept of Home evokes various associations, including our experience of domestic spaces in relation to their designated public/private status, as well as the collection and curation of personal possessions within those spaces. Often our sense of self and security is linked to feeling ‘at home’, insinuating that this sensation is not always related to a particular place or building.

At first glance, Home from Home gives an impression of family, refuge and sanctuary, but upon closer inspection, it also begins to uncover associated feelings of anxiety and uncertainty relating to superstition, illness and transience.' Abc Archive, 2011

Endeavour: Hospitals in Whitby over Time

Endeavour, a history of hospitals in Whitby over time where records show the first hospital in 1109 by Spital Bridge until the present hospital on Spring Hill and the same site as the 1925 War Memorial Hospital built with donations from Whitby Residents themselves - truly their hospital.

Monthly Map Books

I am making Monthly Map books for the artist book genre exhibition 'HOME' at 153 Woodhouse Lane, Leeds that is curated by Louise Atkinson to coincide with the International Artists book Fair in Leeds. The Exhibition opens on the 11th of March and will be open until the 18th in a large Victorian House opening on Friday 11th of March 2011.

A lot of my work is related to intimate and domestic objects so it seems appropriate for this exhibition. I am working on Monthly Maps. These books will be based on source material gathered for a daily colour project in 2008 and 2009, where washing was colour coordinated when hung to dry and photographed. The source material covers august 2008 to April 2009. All months haven't been processed yet, but I anticipate making Monthly maps for August, September, November, December and April, with an edition of at least two so one could be on display in the exhibition and others for sale at the fair. They can be completely opened out and framed if wished.

From 10th of May until 18th of July 2010, The Manor House in the Ryedale Folk Museum of Rural Life in Hutton-le-Hole is displaying work by Corinne LaPierre http://www.corinnelapierre.co.uk/ and Yours Truly in connection with the French celebration of Bastille Day. There will be a Bastille Day Picnic (14th July) , Bal Musette Dance (17th July) and French Celebration Day with events (18th July). I was very grateful for the opportunity to produce this piece and gain access to the archives for the University which covers the rich history and heritage of the colleges of Ripon and York St John and the development toward Univesity status. When Roddy Hunter, John Maw and I looked at a focus for this heritage piece in the archives the long narrow photographs of the past students (alumni) caught our attention. It was decided to make them the centre of the work. This is where the title of the work has been derived from, the abundance of past students or alumni. It is also based on the motto of the University which is: "Ut Vitam Habeant et Abundantius". Translated as "That they may have life and in abundance". I think the archives were proof of the fulfilment of this motto.

I am also very grateful to all the past students who attended the Archive roadshow day in 2009 and shared there memories and experiences of their time at the colleges. They highlighted their respect for the buildings which were part of the campuses, the strong connections to the church represented by both Ripon Cathedral and York Minster, the different routines and the change which occured in the 1960-70's. This change was echoed in the archives as the photographs changed from black and white to colour. With the testimony of past students in mind, the intention for this piece is to make some of the archives visible to all students so that they can share in the rich heritage and foster pride for their university. Ultimately this piece is about people and time.

'Alumni Abundates' is displayed in a corridor in the Quad on the Lord Mayor's site of York St John University. It is in a corridor that connects the front entrance to the centre of the Quad (Main old Building) and fondly referred to by past students as 'windy passage'. I like to think I have added to this by bring in a visual form of wind of change which occured over the last 169 years. The corridor is the start of the Heritage Trail which is a walk round the campus of York St John.

Working on Heritage Project

Recently I have been concentrating on the heritage project for York St John University. This is a project which looks at the history of the colleges of Ripon and St John from their emergence in 1841 to the present day University Status 2010. The resource has been the Archives of both Ripon and St John with a concentration on all the student photographs which documented many of those students who studied and graduated. Students in abundance.

The name of the work is: Alumni abundantes, 1841 - 2010. This is based on the University Motto: Ut Vitam Habeant et Abundantius. (That they may have live and in abundance). Abundantes is a present participle used as an adjective form the verb abundare, meaning very approriately: overflowing, plentiful, abounding, and of plants shooting up with abundance. The last reference to plants is a nice connection to the Logo of the university which is a leaf and bud.

These layered photoworks will be printed on anodised aluminium and installed in the entrance corridor to the Quad, a corridor affectionately known as Windy Passage. I hope the image will offer a glimps of the Wind of change and the Passage of time which has happened over the past 159 years.

6 Panels, each 1000 x 750 mm, will form a 6 metre long display (that is 18 feet for all the imperials out there.) Installation should be complete by 26th of March.

ARTBLOC a contemporary artists cooperative in York, celebrated 1,000,047th Arts Birthday on January 17th, 2010 in conjunction with East Street Arts in Leeds. We participated in a Workshop: Situation for Performance: Workshop for Permanent Creation lead by Roddy Hunter.

Traces and objects left from performance #403 devised by Bob Lens, and Judgment for String, Wood and Stainless Steel which I performed adapted from Judgment for String and Brass by Dick Higgins.

Pasta Drying Display. Blue pasta divised by Steve Humble to complement the blue cocktails at the Fluxux Banquet. The pasta was produced by al the 'no spectators, only participants' at the non-baking workshop, which I lead, to prepare the fluxus food for the banquet.

Through focussing on repetitive process, my practice seeks to expose new insights into routine everyday structures and systems. In this process, I am endeavouring to “layer” slices in time and create complex images or installations that are full of richness and depth. My works attempts to extol the virtue of the ordinary and the routine.

The materials used in my practice are a combination of digital photography, drawing, and printing on a variety of papers including handmade paper. The process of layering figurative images from research or observation produces work that takes on a more abstract appearance. Unconventional methods of layering in my work echo the materials I am using such as sewing layers together when dealing with a domestic theme.

A variety of themes have been explored, including daily washing routines, the cycle of the seasons, the recording of Archaeological finds and the historical archives of a leading university. Through my work I reveal the complexity and interrelation of the world we live in. I hope to foster respect for human endeavour including the routine.

Daily Colour Project: Sustaining systems

August: the first month the project was consistently recorded on my return from holiday,

After applying to participate in the mail art of Acquired Collective http://acquiredcollective.blogspot.com/, I received my postcard through the mail with some instructions and 2 weeks maximum to make my response. This was the result: Banker 2008 Bird in the Air.

The works references the changes which have occurred in the financial world between 1978 and 2008 and our subsequent perception of bankers. The format relates to the postcard photograph and the Amish tradition of patchwork quilts. In opposition to the name of the old village store the pattern used for the work is ‘bird in the air’ alluding to the uncertainty which results from the credit crunch.

Daily Colour Project, December Patchwork

December images have been sewn together and dates have been embossed. December was a wet month and washing had to be dried inside overnight. Some days, including the 25th no washing was done. This leaves blank squares with dates still embossed. The last four units have been left blank, as in the structure of that particular month in 2008.

Patchworks in progress

I have started to produce the final layout for the daily colours project. The toned down selected photographs for each day have been printed on Khadi paper, paper made from cotton cut-offs from the t-shirt industry in India. Handmade with a lovely deckle edging.

I have laid out the images for the months of August 08 and September 08, the first two months in which I consistently recorded this daily discreet art performance and practice. Dates will be embossed on each piece of paper; some pieces will be completely blank following the layout of the western calendar system. The pieces are intended to be sewn together in the fashion of a patchwork quilt.

The images record whether the washing was dried inside or outside according to the weather and seasonal changes. The number of wet days in August are a strong reminder of the climat change which is affecting us globally and locally.

I have just spent a lovely morning setting up for the Make Do and Mend Exhibition. http://www.artlink.uk.net/

Opening storage boxes, unrolling work and setting up is one of the great pleasures of being an artist. When there is a lovely space available for work to be displayed and putting the finishing touches on an installation is very rewarding. It makes all the soul searching, questions and difficult choices arising in the production of the work worth it.

Embedded Strata

I decided to make a hard book cover for this book as the binding was getting loose. The handmade paper is rough and full of interesting residue from the original papers and waste soil from the Hungate Dig, but tears easily. I decided the cover should be reminescent of the boxes in which archaeological artefacts are stored; so I opted for a simple cover of brown wrapping paper.

This is one of the books which will be on show at the 12th International Contemporary Artists'Book Fair at the University of Leeds on 6th and 7th of March. You will be able to leaf through our works at the 'Kruse e Scriven' Display.

I have started a project out of frustration with the necessity and regularity of housework, the importance of organisation in a smooth running of our daily lives taking up the space of creativity. I therefore had to bring a little art into this daily labour. The evidence of which has been posted on facebook for the last fortnight and I will endeavour to update this blog as a first step in the realisation of this project. It is likely to take a more tangible form in the future incoporating elements of repetition and time. For now the photographs just have dates.

When asked for a drawing/work for a raffle for a charity which provides education for children with disabilities -children who otherwise would not have a chance of education, school days, learning and developing their potential - I thought of this drawing. It was part of the Thread of life series. This little bobbin of beautiful red silk twist thread could be used to produce some beautiful dress, embroidery, shirt, piece of clothing. It would hold the material together or adorn it. It has the potential to produce something useful, valuable and beautiful. We ourselves all have potential, valuable silk thread, and it would be good if each of us was given the opportunity to develop that potential. It would be to the benefit of all.

Final adjustments were made to the installation for my graduate show, creating a unique space for the viewer to experience the process of art and archaeology.

Without the clutter of the boxes, tools, ladders, paintbrushes etc. the space with only its purposeful objects looks better than in my imagination or on paper. It was fantastic to have those few days to revise the details, rethink some of the space and the viewer's experience in the actual environment. I hope you can come and enjoy it. For those of you who live to far and don't manage to come I will post more pictures after the show.

Graduate show preparation

Installation research for the Graduate Show at York St John, 6th to 14th of June. I have been trying to include gravity and pressure into the stack of papers, to emphasize the 'dust to dust' idea of the composted remnants of lives which are excavated at the Hungate Archaeological dig. I didn't want it to be a downtrodden feeling so I wanted to take the viewers eye upwards to the future. I feel I finally achieved this with the plumb line and weight creating this space between the objects.

The stack of paper years will be displayed next to a table with a working set up, highlighting the process human labour be it papermaking, archaeology, research or history.

I have really enjoyed these sessions although they were sometimes stressful to organise and set up. There is something very compelling about drawing the human figure. Your drawing tool can follow the contours, make a volume, dance on the paper and create a mood.

I am delighted that my book, Embedded Strata, has been selected to be in the From Book to Book Exhibitions which will take place at Leeds Art Gallery.

the Paper for this book is made out of unwanted material, which carries nonetheless the history of it previous use. The paper base is made out of paper earmarked for recycling from home, office and educational uses. The texture and inclusions of the paper are very tactile and varied. The colour is subtly different in each batch of papers and provided by the 'waste' soil of the different areas of the hungate archaeological dig .

Drawing: process in layers of time:

The drawings are a response to the activity in the entrance hall, which I have been allocated for displaying my work. This is a changing, working environment where trays of finds are stacked to dry and safety clothing is available for use by those going on site. The objects in the drawings belong to different ‘layers of time’, from the Roman era to the present, the time span of the site itself. My drawing highlights the significance that these humble objects hold within a particular context. The act itself references the drawing process of mapping.

This drawing is based on a piece of a Roman mortarium, a large bowl with embedded grit to grind and mix foods. It is related to our present pestle and mortar. It would have been used in the daily routine of food preparation.
This object was found by Will and I, in the infill of a drain cut.

This drawing is based shoes: the archaeologist’s steel toe capped boots worn for safety and an early 20th century female leather shoe probably worn for a smart occasion found in context 39000.

Installation at the Hungate Dig

The Installation is set up, ready for viewing and assessment. There will also be on Open Day at Hungate Dig on Saturday, 26th of January when you will be able to learn more about the archaeological site as well as view the installation.

Archaeology – Art - Process Statement of Intent

This installation was informed by my experiences during the student residency at the Hungate archaeological dig with the York Archaeological Trust (YAT). The intention was to respond to the finds, the ordinary domestic objects, their perceived significance and interpretation. As I was a novice in archaeology, I joined the volunteers in the summer and learned basic skills; how to correctly use a trowel to dig, to read the soil, to wash and sort the finds, to draw maps and describe contexts.

My artistic response developed through the process of using three separate media - photographs, drawing and papermaking – the unifying concept became ‘layers’, ‘time’ and ‘process’.

The activity on site is fascinating and in constant flux. I intended to capture this activity, the textures, features and some of the archaeological processes performed on the site and in the HQ building. The resulting images are like palimpsests, reminiscent of the work of Indris Khan, with stratified, layered moments in time.

I experimented with mud and grit, intending to embed the archaeological site into paper. This led to papermaking, thus recycling paper that was earmarked for disposal, either from domestic or corporate sources; representing various endeavours of humankind, such as finance, education, faith and music. Archaeologists refer to their activity as interpreting the rubbish from previous generations. The various soils used to colour the paper were also part of the spoils of the site, the rubbish from the archaeological process. Paper itself is transient. Recycling this rubbish is a way of investigating the significance of seemingly insignificant discarded material. It also questions the responsibility we have towards future generations, sustainability, and the legacy of our rubbish. The layers of paper are like a core sample of the site, the deposited layers of time, one millimetre corresponding to each year of the past.

The making of the paper became a repetitive process, with a performance on site shared with the volunteers and archaeologists. Through this performance I realised that the focus of the work shifted from objects to process and sharing of work practice. The emphasis was on the process itself, the tactile practical involvement, the human interaction, the social space. Paradoxically, the process produced an object, the paper. Interestingly, going full circle from object to process back to object.

For me the dense layers where there is less gap between the sheets is still the most attactive. So this really spurred me on to make a book for the Book from Book project for Leeds.

Commissioned dinner set for York St John University. The dinner set is based on the new Universtity Logo. I wanted to incorporate the experience of being at uni, the working against the wind, still belonging to a guiding branch, knowing that one day you would fly away and have to take your learning and skill into the wide world by yourself.

The dinner set was used at the Conferment dinner of York St John as a Universityon 8th of November 2007 . Hope the set will be enjoyed for many years to come.

Tanka Seasons in Reception Area

Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer from the Tanka Seasons Series, based on Japanese Tanka Poetry, a ancient form of poetry with a rigid format of 31 syllables divided over 5 lines (5,7,5,7,7 syllables per line). The symbolic images used in the poetry is often based on nature and closely related to the seasons, something which seems lots in our urban 24/7 society.

New Drawing from Hungate Dig

During the summer I have been escaping and volunteering one day a week at an archaeological dig in York. The area is called Hungate and being developed over the next few years. You can find information on http://www.jorvik-viking-centre.co.uk/hungate/abouthungate/about1.htm I have found it fascinating, taking a glimpse at how archaeology works, how to read the soil, about finds, about context and about the people who work and volunteer in a very interesting community.
Last week we found a piece of a mortarium, an roman food processor bowl, like a pestle and mortar, and it was so interesting that I had a strong urge to draw it, follow the curves of the spout and rim we found, the colours and markings of age, but the incredible strenght and its cool pottery feel that survived 2 millenia. It is broken, so it was rubbish to the romans because unusable and found in an infill trench, but it is a treasure to me. So this is the first draft after the first day drawing and it feels absolutely wonderful to be drawing again. Slept the best in ages.

Design for dinner service

These photographs of Japanese trees were taken this spring when I had the good fortune to go to Kyoto, Japan. I love trees especially the ones with twisting branches. Close to my house there are oak trees with contorting limbs. I enjoy watching the changes over the seasons.

These photos were used as an inspiration when I was commissioned by my uni to produce some dinner set designs based on the uni logo, a connected bud and leaf. The project is now in its final stages. The brief requested an oriental feel to the design, which is when I thought of using these photographs.

I wanted the final design to convey what it felt like to be at uni, running against the wind, holding on to course structure and especially fellow students, working to grow from bud to leaf and eventually let go and flow your own path.

I really enjoyed doing this project, working with people who were clear about their expectation, open to suggestions and respectful of creativity. It felt good to be an artist (or at least an art student). Especially since I didn't manage to steal enough time away from family to endulge much in creative work apart from cooking!

Potential, Print, from Thread of life series

Three small works have been selected to be in the Ryedale Open Exhibition, grandly named RA, which is held at the Milton Rooms in Malton from 21st July to 28th July (not sundays) from 10 to 4 pm. This will allow me to meet artists who live and work in my area of Yorkshire, Ryedale looking beyond York.

Two hand printed, hand made books

The inspiration for my work is drawn from ordinary objects, gestures and glimpses of daily life. The sewing implements I concentrated on belonged to a woman called Frances, who was the great aunt of a friend. These simple sewing materials have little pecuniary value, yet are cherished objects that may be read as indicators of her life and times.

Spanning thousands of years, from the classical Greek to Norse mythology, there are stories concerned with thread and weaving, metaphors for human existence. Famous in western culture is the story of the Fates, referred to as the ‘Wyrd Sisters’ in Anglo-Saxon mythology, who spun the thread of one’s life and measured its extent. Needlework used as a metaphor for social, personal and cultural narrative. Unused bobbins are pristine, full of potential, with the thread still constrained. Needles are tools, life’s lessons; they are sharp but necessary for development. We need fastenings and hooks to hang on to and make bonds in relationships. The hands reference human conscious required to give direction and meaning.

My work as an artist is intimately bound up with my attention toward the tactile, material world; the quality and grain of paper, the scratching of the dry-point surface or the raised edge of a stitched line In making books my intention is that the viewer will share in this tactile experience; they are invited to handle the books, both to experience a deeper physical relationship to the work and to imprint something of themselves upon it leaving unintentional residue which then becomes part of the work’s history, its own life.

Although this work may be read as ‘feminine’ because of its subject matter my hope is that it resists gender specificity. Needlework has always been a process performed by, and of course essential to, both men and women. Not until the creation of the Medieval Guilds was the separation between male commercial and female domestic work begun*.

My intention is that this work should be quiet and attentive, as peaceful and serene as a Dutch interior, a homage to a domestic tranquillity that is the antithesis of the loudness, coarseness, information overload and sensational headlines that characterise much of our current culture; it asks us to retune to a quiet sensitivity that listens to the inner voice of our humanity.
